The mist peers through broken crystal-ware,
The mute moon-light bathes her room,
Hurt, abused and sobbing,
She remains,
Sleeping in;

Twelve years old is she,
And she has welts and bruises up her legs,
No redemption from her father,
She remains,
Sleeping in;

Her mother’s gone forever,
while she grows older daily;
Days speed by, nights creep on her,
and she remains,
Sleeping in;

He invades her every night.
She screams for mercy, howls and pleads,
No witnesses, no clemency,
She remains,
Sleeping in;

Rape, incest, what does she care?
Humanity means naught for her,
The devil rules her home,
She remains,
Sleeping in;

Her soul, tormented, cries out: Enough!
She cuts her wrists and bleeds –
The world around her awakens,
As she remains,
Sleeping in.

Poet’s note: It is only recently that incidents in India, esp. the north, have caused a mini-revolution on the issue of minor’s-rape. However, the issue is a very old one. I wrote this poem on another site in 2004. Hope you all like it.
