Only For Votes
A translation of my Marathi poem “Ghadamodi Votansathi” (with some additions to it).
[A major part of the first verse is from my previously posted work “Why have you rejected my lal?”]
When the results of the elections
Showed the fall of the Sena bastions
Then said the old tiger, Thackeray Bal,
“Oh my Marathi matiche lal!
I have ever fought for thee.
Why have you forsaken me
And rejected Uddhav, my lal?”
When Raj launched on North Indians an attack
Declared Sena, “We shall protect.”
Then feeling that this might the “Marathi Manoos” anger
It now undertook a new manouevre.
Against him who is not only Maharashtra’s but also the nation’s pride
Did Balasaheb launch a scathing diatribe,
“Sachin, don’t play on the political wicket;
Stick only to your cricket.”
Though of the country is Delhi the capital,
Yet Mumbai is its heart financial.
So now, if Sachin said, “Mumbai belongs to every Indian”,
Did he at all err, tell me my brethren.
Neither can this sweet tongue be popularized
If signboards in other languages are vandalized,
Nor assaults on examinees and cabbies from another state
Ensure jobs for people native to this state.
Watching all this does one feel
True love for Marathi in this is nil;
These events one feels have been engineered
Only for getting votes, my dear!
