To Be Or Knot To Be
Do not forget to remember
My Mother said to me
Remember what? I asked
Nothing she said
Just don’t forget
On my walk to school
I had these words in my head
Could not work it out
Just did not see
Remember to forget?
Forget to remember
Do not remember
Or do not forget
Should I remember
Or should I forget?
By the time I reached my school
I had three knots in my tie
One to remember
One to forget
And one to remember to forget
At lunch I was looking at my tie
Which knot was for remember
Which Knot was for forget
So I tied another one
Just so I would not forget
When I got home that afternoon
My mother said to me
“Did you remember what I said”
Yes I think so Mother, I tied knots in my tie
And where have you left your tie? Was her reply.

Ray,
very funny. Haven’t heard a story like that in an age. Notes on mobiles I suppose.
I remember my brother tying knots in a string to remember something. Me, if I couldn’t remember? , it wasn’t worth remembering,
Fergus
A very beautiful, witty, poem with lots of sense.
Liked immensely.
Yes, our life’s tie gets knotty to capacity with all such knots and we want to lose our tie somewhere but it is often quite difficult.
Some define Happiness as “Good health & bad memory”.
This poem reminds me.. about ..all the confusion.. that keeps us busy everyday. And one day we come to know that.. what was most important is left far behind in the confusion. Nice one. It has put a smile on face! Thank You!
Thank you all so very much for your appreciation of this slightly different writ of mine. Thank you !
Haven’t read such a ‘different’ poem in a while. I haven’t tried remembering, or forgetting, or remembering not to forget or foregtting to remember using KNOTS!
Keep writing!

I'm a 57 year old English Guy living here in India. I have been writing Poetry for many years now with the majority ending up in the bin. I have only recently discovered this site and it has inspired me to reveal my work to others. Having said that I have had some of my Lyrics performed by a local Keralan Band called AUM.
I have recently gained some success with some of my lyrics, with two songs currently with an American record producer. So under advice, all my work is now copyrighted. © Ray Gorringe 2009
