By Times…

By times I have given up things,

Drink, sugar, meat and cigarettes.

Going out and guitar strings,

Cake and Cuisine de France baguettes.

By times I have thought I have done well,

Healthier both body and pocket will get.

But really it’s just been a wishful spell,

Foregoing is no substitute for goals set.

By times I let myself too easily drift,

Wondering about doing all that I can.

Fuzzy thinking never gave a life a lift,

Nothing lasting is done without a plan.

Yet now it seems I am back to square one,

Among all those who have to scrimp and save.

But this time I am determined to have fun,

To banks and governments I will be no slave.
