Life’s strange twists and turns

The cigarette burn

Which once your raging heart

Singed onto your hand

Is now cold and dried.

The tired fingernails scratch

the wound to draw blood.

Memories flood like a deluge

Of pouring pain and misty-morning-like sounds

which whisper that you once had love.

This is all that remain

As you sip your cup of tea

And think of thoughts

Those now seem like ancient myths and tales

When all fails

You keep going back

To scratch, to draw blood.

The flood begins again.

    Anirban,
wonderful piece of free verse, free flowing and a strong imagery well interwoven. The readers absorbs the imagery and theme together to great impact.
    “The cigarette burn

    • Hi gion – i wrote this poem about the human psyche – i hate deciphering poems but it’s like when we have a bad memory which we nurture in our minds – to please the ego, or to justify our actions whatever they maybe – that’s the wound – and just when the scab forms we dig it again to relive the pain for either pleasing our egos or just in regret or pain… i hv ben trying to quit too 🙂

When I read your line “memories flood like a deluge” – whch I had used in one of my poems- The Goan Deluge- just thought that hey- how many of us think alike in this world?!
    Good one

  5. @renu rakheja, it’s said – 1 idea hits 6 people across the world at the same time – it all depends who acts on it first… yeah we have so many similarities in our thoughts – we as humans are amazing!!

  6. @Priyal, Hi priyal – thank you once again…

  7. @rajdeep, thanks rajdeep for the welcome… and i am glad that the words touched you…
