“Kindly do the needful…..”!
Those were the days,
In the office,
When there were no computers,
Main method of action
External as also Internal
Was, through well written letters,
Most common noting
On the letters were
“For necessary action”,
& “Kindly do the needful”,
Sometime both noting
Would appear together.
On the same letter, like,
“For necessary action.
Please do the needful”
To look like complete instructions….!.
The predominant use of these notings,
Helped to create lot of confusion & humor,
otherwise in quite a serious office atmosphere.
The accounts department
For income tax deduction from salary,
Needed information from all
Whether the individual is single or married,
And the no of children, if married.
An unmarried officer replied,
Married/ single…..Single,
If married, no. of children……Does not arise,
Then per habit added
“This is for your necessary action”
As if this was not enough,
A married officer sent in his details too.
Married or single….Married
If married, no of children….NIL
Then as per his usual practice added,
“This is for necessary action.
Kindly do the needful”
He was a higher officer,
So his instructions,
Had to be more specific
& complete…..!

Thanks very much. The letter was addressed to Accounts dept to do the needful for it was their concern.
