Locked Red Door, A monument…!.

Locked Red Door, A monument…!.

Locked Red Door

A locked Red Door.

Yes, friends,

I am reminded,

It was a locked red door like this.

Year, somewhere in early sixties,

I, a young sales engineer then,

From Bombay, on official duty,

Walking along, near Pune railway station,

Came across an old Heritage like Building,

With a prominent looking fairly big Name board,

In Devnagari, announcing that

It was a “Free” reading Library for Public,

A government sponsored generous project.

As I go near it,

I find the entrance door to it, locked,

With a big tumbler lock,

Like this same photograph,

And a notice, pasted on the side,

Again in Devnagari, informing

That the free library is presently closed,

For lack of funds!

After about six months,

I again pass that way,

Near the library,

To find that

The same state of affair persists,

Only the dust has obliged & freely painted

The Name Board, door & lock,

With the notice in place,

Still doing its job..

I wonder, if this Library was to be closed,

Why did they not remove,

The Name board of the Library itself,

A wiser thing to do,

Instead of pasting the shabby notice.

Is it that they did not have funds, even

For expenses to remove the name Board,

And pasting notice was a cheaper option…?

What was the sanctity of starting

A “Free Library”,

Why was the “free” Library,

Started in the first place,

If funds were a problem.

And to fool whom?

Why should the building be kept rotting

Without proper use,

Who is benefited?

Such & so many questions.

Yes, to me friends,

This picture is a monument & a symbol,

Of so many free schemes

For public welfare & public benefit, launched,

Advertised & inaugurated with big fanfare,

Which have met with death in infancy,

By an indiscreet notice pasted on the side,

And the door closed & locked indignantly.

The Name Boards have however remained in place,

Although, may be very dusty & rusty now.

But the names of these Welfare schemes

Have continued to figure in Politician’s Manifesto.

Of past achievements, during election .……!.

Vishvanandji, you have put together a beautiful set of english lines, but while reading these lines they feel to be lost, though at the very end they all of a sudden bring sense to the poem, like surprise surprise.

The Imagination put in this poem is very good and it is as better as it can get.I suppose the Independence day has made you think towards this poem and has brought out the daring idea. Your sense of patriotism reflected totally here. The poem is good and deserves * * * *

Thought provoking and another unique interpretation to the contest picture
