The Bride
Written for p4poetry prompt - http://forum.p4poetry.com/topic.php?id=74&replies=2#post-762
Amidst holy chant
And excited chatter
Valuables exchanged hands.
Around the burning fire
And blessings galore
Two beings summoned
As husband and wife;
Sealed by the garland,
Sindhoor, mangalsutra
And a bunch of lies.
The dowry was no good
The bride spoke too much
Got pregnant with a girl child
Yet asked if she could work.
The child was aborted
The valuables used up
The vows were forgotten
Humanity was shunned
Amidst hushed whispers
And the wrath of fire
The innocent bride died.
No one spoke a word
Cruel souls felt no hurt
Only a few shed tears
For their little girl
Once wrapped in reds
Now silent, unheard.
