A Budding Banaras Pundit

This poem captures the trade that sells god and prayers. It talks about how the city of banaras {Banaras city is just one of the cities cited in the poem as an example} has changed from over the years from a pure god seeking place to a god selling place.

Ram rejoices the radiance, remittance of the rhymes,

along the by-lanes and by the busiest bay of Banaras,

where the water is wished, and the wishers are many

who chant for others well-beings all day, and pursuit the penny purse.

Where songs are sung to shrink and sever sins

and rituals are rendered and reimbursed,

the grandeur the guru, the greater the gain,

an easy drive from deception to divine.

The Banaras’s borne boy brought up in the design,

in this business and the beauty, in the buys or the bows.

A town that has built tainted trails of tramps and the trodden,

a town that has trimmed prayers to fit the pocket

and even advertised returns,  proportionate and proven.

For he’s been part of the profession, his past and the present,

pundits from his own family who purify and pardon,

the business blooms from the blood of the boy

and the fellow of the fraction, he’s one added toy.

He trades now, and the triumphs the treasure of his tutors,

this young lad too, now lights the luminous ladders to the lords

and prays the passion and prays to pull-off the payer’s odds;

for one day this blameless boy, would be a business built, for sure

and when that be – the question?

A budding Banaras pundit, he would then be tomorrow,

still adolescent at-moment, at-times, attends prayers for free

and for a poor mother, he prays for her child,

or for a poor father, he hopes for hefty harvest of his field

but the question is, would he still do that, as some still do, when a celebrated pundit he be.
