Fresh from swimming
in the river of your thoughts
arriving soaking wet at the banks,
then, leaping in to your pen
enraptured by blue stars
inscribed in words on paper
is your togetherness
 
Sailing along my blood
atop those boats, my eyes,
if it drops anchor along the shore
of that sea of my thoughts
it must be your letter
 
The syllables in your letter
are not mere crystallized memories
 
When I read them,
they are starbust flashes
that bind the sky of your village
with the sky inside me
when I read them, again,
they are the evening lamps
that broden the twilight sky
when I read them,
sitting in a chair
or reclining on a bed
levitating in my loneliness
they are narrative notes,
melodic elements of myriad raagas,
fragment of memory
that slip into silent caves and rest,
reverberating within
 
Skipping along the syllables,
I can reach your presence
to hear you speak
Walking along the words,
I can alight the crossroads
where we first met
Travelling on the train of sentences
I can caress with a glance
your hands raised in farewell
 
Your letter is the rainbow
that tethers the sky to the earth
one can drift awash in those colours
 
A letter is a fragrance
that does not fade
with it one can always anoint the heart
 
A letter is beehive of memories
safely stored with me, a sweetness
longing to be read
 
Friend..!
Long distance phone calls have removed
the heart’s voice to really long distance
Among airwaves littered with lukewarm chatter
a genuine voice has faded away
Amidst this maze of machinery
nature has lost her bearings
 
Friend..!
Do write letters sometimes,
Send a drizzle of syllables my way
once in a while, on this parched earth
allow me,
whenever I am hungry and thirsty
to harvest sprouts of poetry…
