When you would stare in to the fire
to tell me its glare,
then if you see the sparks, which burnt your every dare,
and still lust to plunge in to which.
Then my son, you have sure shown a desire
to look in to a world like this.
When you would look in to the sand
to tell me its shades,
then if you see the blood, that was cut from the dead.
and see it still drop from a mother’s eye.
Then my son, you have sure made a try
to look in to a world like this.
When you would dive in to the water
to tell me its depth,
then if you see the waves, that every eye has swept,
and show that an ocean still remains, for every sorrow that would be wept.
Then my son, you have sure made an attempt
to look in to a world like this.
When you would go and touch the sky
to tell me its space,
then if you hear a cry, and show that only a heart it is,
that fills all the void.
Then my son, you have sure made a try
to look in to a world like this.
When you would put a hand in to the air
to tell me its path,
if you then, feel a tear, which the whirling winds have brought
and still manage to cry their sorrow.
Then my son, you have sure made a try
to look in to a world like this.
