Salaam Teenagers

please bear with the length..couldn’t cut some parts off…

Yes.

I’ve been awake.

Studying half-asleep;

Dragging through…

Pages after pages…

Assassinating the assignment.

Hips go numb.

Sitting here since ages.

So much happening

In my semi-conscious mind -

“Why was she ignoring me today?”

“Why didn’t she have anything to say?”

“Will I make it to a good college?”

“Why didn’t I

Get my pocket money this week?”

“I have a soft corner for her;

Who let this thing leak?”

My mind keeps rolling these-

In-and-out, involuntarily.

As if my fingers got brains;

I keep writing, involuntarily.

With sympathy for myself,

I hug apathy.

But…

There is one universal truth

That I am not alone…I am not the only one.

I am one of the today’s youth…

The teens…

Who wish their life to be perfect and worth-living…

The teens…

Who want to enjoy

Every single molecule they breath…

And.

The teens…

Who force themselves to semi-death

By burying their heads in deathly books;

The teens…

Who are bound to stab their interests

And do something they never wanted to do.

The teens…

Whose never-say-die attitude

Gradually dies;

after facing criticism due to failures…

The absolutely-helpless teens…

Who are supposed to be doing

What they want to…

But end up doing;

What others tell them to.

And the best part is…

We teens keep tolerating.

Leave ourselves suffocating…

And gradually modify

Into society – friendly geeks.

The textbook-bound freaks.

Ignoring what our heart speaks.

My heart swells with sympathy.

As I fail to understand this foreign philosophy.

Hallelujah;

Salaam Teenagers.

oh god….yes ! and we are all to blame for it…esp the parents that load the kids and drown them with their expectations.
very well written depicting the agonies of a teenaged mind

Yes, we do end up doing what others want us to do….the length wasn’t as long as i expected it to be. Well written about teenager’s turmoil!

A very Beautiful & meaningful poem for the time.
Makes one really & deeply empathise with the very sorry plight of the teenagers of today, who are supposed to be the future of the nation & whom by and large we do not understand & only criticise.
Could someone write a poem which would appropriately encourage them and give solutions towards bettering their lot as also direction towards a right focus in life. It could also then turn out to be a very valuable & a great poem….

How do u write such skiers inthe field of poems!! You are definitely going to earn name and fame in this field. So, li’le Ruskin Bond, keep writing and one day burn the Earth in the fire your poems possess! Invincible!!

Shreyansh,
oooh, after reading this poem I was caught on this line ” this foreign philosophy”. Now to comment against the flow.
“Teens”. a myth, a mirage… but between childhood and adulthood there is that grey transition, short or long, the world over.
I don’t like this poem I find it shallow even as I feel the intensity and spirit that penned it. Maybe it’s just me fed up with hearing about “the young people” since the sixties.
